The Six Dimensions of Power: How the Sovereign Scale System Measures More Than Strength
Power is usually treated as a single question: How strong is the character?
That question is too small.
In serious character analysis, strength is only one expression of capability. A character can possess extraordinary physical force and still be strategically incompetent, slow to react, unable to withstand their own output, incapable of controlling their energy, psychologically fragile, or narratively insignificant. Conversely, a character with less raw physical strength can become extraordinarily dangerous through superior speed, perception, strategy, endurance, energy control, or will.
That is the problem the Sovereign Scale System is designed to address.
The system divides character power into six fundamental dimensions: Strength, Speed, Durability, Energy, Intelligence, and Willpower. Rather than treating these as interchangeable versions of “power,” the framework treats them as distinct but interacting domains of capability.
This approach also connects to broader philosophical questions about what power actually means. In “Some General Thoughts on the Question of Power: Capacity, Agency, and the Achievement of Outcomes”, power is considered not merely as possession, but as the capacity and agency required to achieve outcomes. Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Power” likewise treats power as something expressed through action, character, discipline, and the ability to convert potential into consequence.
The result is a fundamentally different approach to character power scaling.
The question is no longer simply Who can hit harder?
It becomes:
What can this being actually do, how efficiently can they do it, how long can they sustain it, what can they survive, how intelligently can they apply it, and what happens when their will is tested?
That is a much harder question.
It is also a much more useful one.
Why Character Power Scaling Usually Gets the Question Wrong
Most informal power-scaling debates collapse capability into spectacle.
A mountain gets destroyed. A planet gets shattered. A character moves faster than light. Someone survives an explosion. Someone else possesses a supposedly limitless energy reserve.
The numbers get bigger.
The analysis often gets worse.
The problem is not quantification itself. Quantification is useful. The problem is pretending that one measurement can explain an entire being.
The broader capability approach, as explained by the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, offers a useful parallel. It distinguishes between possessing resources or potential and having the genuine freedom and practical ability to convert those resources into meaningful functionings. A fictional character may possess enormous power in theory while lacking the conditions, control, knowledge, or agency required to use it effectively.
Consider two hypothetical characters.
Character A can generate planetary-scale physical force but has mediocre reaction time, limited stamina, poor strategic adaptation, and little resistance to mental or energy-based attacks.
Character B possesses substantially less physical strength but can perceive an opponent’s attack before it fully develops, manipulate energy with extreme efficiency, adapt tactically in real time, recover from serious damage, and maintain extraordinary psychological resistance under pressure.
Which one is more powerful?
There is no intellectually serious answer without defining the situation.
A physical contest may favor Character A.
A prolonged conflict may favor Character B.
An ambush changes the equation.
A war changes it again.
A political crisis changes it again.
A confrontation involving energy manipulation changes it again.
A conflict designed around psychological pressure changes it yet again.
This is why the Sovereign Scale System does not treat power as a single ladder. Its six Codices describe different dimensions of capability and then examine how those dimensions interact through limitations, trade-offs, scaling behavior, and contextual performance.
Power is not merely magnitude. It is capability operating under conditions.
That distinction matters.
The Six Dimensions of Power
The Sovereign Scale System organizes power through six primary Codices:

These are not six ways of describing the same thing.
They are six different ways capability becomes consequential.
They also reflect a broader truth: power is never only about what someone possesses. It is about what they can do with what they possess, under pressure, within a social and moral environment.
That is why discussions of power must also consider agency, identity, responsibility, and consequence.
1. STR — Strength, Power and Stamina
Strength is the most obvious dimension of power, which is precisely why it is often overvalued.
The Sovereign Scale System separates Strength, Power, and Stamina rather than treating them as synonyms.
Strength concerns maximal force production: the ability to exert physical or metaphysical force against resistance or displacement.
Power concerns the rate at which energy is transferred through force. A being may possess enormous strength without necessarily expressing that strength through the highest possible impact output.
Stamina concerns sustained performance: how long force can be maintained before structural or cognitive degradation compromises the being.
That distinction solves a common problem in character analysis.
A character who can lift an enormous object is not automatically a character who can deliver an equivalent destructive strike.
A character who can deliver one devastating strike is not automatically capable of repeating it for hours.
And a character who can maintain extraordinary output indefinitely is operating under an entirely different strategic reality from one who reaches peak performance for only a few seconds.
The STR Codex therefore asks several different questions:
- What can the character lift?
- What force can they generate?
- How efficiently can they express that force?
- How powerful is a strike or impact?
- How long can they maintain high output?
- Does exertion degrade their performance?
- Can their own structure survive their maximum expression?
That final question is crucial.
The Sovereign Scale’s Law of Magnitude rejects the idea that raw output can simply increase without structural consequence. A being’s true strength cannot exceed the integrity of the system producing it without catastrophic consequences.
That creates an important relationship between strength and durability.
A character cannot meaningfully be described as possessing enormous physical force if their own body would be destroyed every time they attempted to use it.
Strength establishes potential. Stamina determines persistence. Power determines expression.
Those are different measurements.
This distinction also matters ethically. The existence of power does not automatically justify its use. A character’s STR rating may describe what they can do, but it does not determine what they should do.
2. SPD — Speed, Reflexes and Reaction Time
Speed is another area where character power scaling routinely becomes sloppy.
“Faster than light” tells us something.
It does not tell us everything.
The SPD Codex separates movement velocity from reflex precision and reaction timing.
That distinction is devastating to simplistic speed arguments.
A character might possess tremendous locomotion speed while having comparatively ordinary perception. Such a character can move extraordinarily quickly but may still be unable to respond effectively to an attack they did not perceive in time.
Movement and cognition are not the same system.
The Sovereign Scale therefore examines speed through multiple dimensions:
Movement. Acceleration. Reflexes. Reaction time. Processing speed.
Its velocity taxonomy moves from human baseline capability through enhanced and metahuman levels, supersonic and hypersonic regimes, relativistic movement, luminal and superluminal states, and ultimately trans-cosmic motion.
But the framework does not stop at velocity.
Its Reflex and Reaction-Time Sub-Codex treats response capability independently, ranging from human reaction times through increasingly sophisticated processing and ultimately precognitive temporal awareness.
That matters because combat does not occur between numbers.
It occurs between perceptions, decisions, movements, and consequences.
A character traveling at extraordinary speed but possessing insufficient reaction time can still be functionally vulnerable.
The framework also establishes a Durability-Speed Correlation. Extreme speed creates extreme structural demands. If a character’s body cannot survive the inertial, thermal, or other consequences of their movement, speed becomes self-destructive rather than advantageous.
This is the difference between assigning a feat and understanding a capability.
Speed is not simply distance divided by time. It is control over the interval between perception, decision, and action.
3. DUR — Durability, Resistance and Regeneration
Durability is often treated as the inverse of strength.
It is not.
The DUR Codex separates three distinct forms of persistence:
Durability is the capacity to withstand direct physical or metaphysical force without structural failure.
Resistance concerns the ability to endure or metabolize threats that are not simply kinetic impacts, including energy, radiation, psychic force, environmental extremes, and reality distortion.
Regeneration concerns restoration after damage, degradation, or destruction.
This distinction is essential.
A character may be extraordinarily durable against blunt force but vulnerable to psychic attacks.
Another may possess tremendous resistance to extreme temperatures but poor recovery from physical injury.
Another may be physically destroyed but capable of reconstructing themselves.
Those are different forms of survivability.
The framework formalizes durability through its own tier system, ranging from human-peak thresholds through increasingly extreme structural capacities and ultimately into omniphysical sovereign territory.
It also introduces the Structural Integrity Ratio, which evaluates durability in relation to applied stress.
That creates an important analytical principle:
Survival is not a vague personality trait. It is a relationship between what is applied and what the system can withstand.
Regeneration complicates the picture further.
A character who takes damage but restores themselves quickly presents a different tactical problem from someone whose body is almost impossible to damage in the first place.
The first character may be vulnerable to incapacitation but extremely difficult to eliminate permanently.
The second may never reach that vulnerability.
The difference matters.
Durability answers, Can you withstand it?
Resistance asks, Can you withstand this particular kind of threat?
Regeneration asks, What happens after the damage has already occurred?
That is far more useful than simply labeling someone “invulnerable.”
4. ENR — Energy Projection, Manipulation and Absorption
Energy is where many fictional power systems become deliberately vague.
A character “controls energy.”
What does that mean?
The Sovereign Scale System forces the question.
The ENR Codex separates energy capability into projection, manipulation, and absorption, then evaluates those abilities through four pillars of energetic sovereignty:
- Output Density
- Frequency Selectivity
- Conversion Efficiency
- Narrative Resonance
Output density concerns how much energy is expressed over a given area and time.
Frequency selectivity concerns what kinds of energy can be generated or manipulated and how precisely.
Conversion efficiency concerns how effectively absorbed energy becomes usable output rather than waste, heat, or structural damage.
Narrative resonance considers whether the energy expression possesses significance beyond its raw physical yield.
That last element makes ENR particularly interesting within the broader Phorditude framework.
Energy is not merely a bigger explosion.
Control matters.
Efficiency matters.
Versatility matters.
Absorption does not automatically equal unlimited power. The Law of Symmetrical Feedback establishes that absorbed energy cannot exceed the structural capacity of the system without forcing release, transformation, or damage.
That prevents a familiar fictional shortcut:
“The character absorbs energy, therefore nothing can ever overpower them.”
No.
Absorption itself has a ceiling determined by the system’s capacity to contain and utilize what it receives.
That produces meaningful weaknesses.
A character may absorb enormous amounts of one energy type but be vulnerable to another.
They may absorb energy efficiently but have limited means of projecting it.
They may possess overwhelming output but poor precision.
They may have extraordinary projection but insufficient stamina.
ENR therefore turns “energy manipulation” from a decorative power label into an actual capability architecture.
5. INT — Intelligence, Perception and Strategic Adaptation
Intelligence is probably the most underestimated component of fictional power scaling.
Not because every smart character should defeat physically superior opponents.
They should not.
The mistake is assuming intelligence means simply having a high IQ or being able to solve difficult equations.
The INT Codex defines cognitive sovereignty through three axes:
Intelligence. Perception. Strategic Adaptation.
Intelligence concerns processing, analysis, and synthesis.
Perception concerns the range, acuity, and depth of awareness.
Strategic adaptation concerns the ability to model changing conditions, anticipate outcomes, and modify behavior in real time.
This produces a much more serious definition of intelligence.
A character can possess enormous information-processing capacity and still make terrible decisions.
A character can possess extraordinary perception but lack strategic discipline.
A character can be less computationally powerful yet dramatically superior at adapting to incomplete information.
That is why the Doctrine of Noetic Magnitude does not reduce cognition to raw processing speed. It emphasizes decision quality under conditions of complexity, incomplete information, and existential consequence.
The Noetic Scale consequently progresses from individual decision-making through enhanced cognition, theater-level strategy, global synthesis, planetary intelligence, stellar and galactic intelligence, universal comprehension, and ultimately omnimental sovereignty.
The framework also establishes two critical bridges.
The Neuro-Energetic Bridge links intelligence to energy efficiency: better cognitive control can produce more precise energy use.
The Temporal-Perceptual Bridge connects perception to effective speed: superior temporal awareness can allow a being to perceive and respond to attacks that their raw locomotion statistics alone would not explain.
This is where the six dimensions begin to reveal why they cannot be analyzed independently.
A powerful mind can make another power more useful.
Intelligence also affects moral agency. A character who can foresee consequences, understand systems, and anticipate suffering may carry a greater burden of responsibility than someone whose power is immense but whose awareness is limited.
6. WIL — Willpower, Presence and Mythic/Narrative Force
The sixth dimension is where the Sovereign Scale System stops behaving like a conventional superhero statistics chart.
WIL concerns Willpower, Presence, and Mythic/Narrative Force.
Willpower concerns the capacity to continue asserting intent under pressure.
Presence concerns the influence produced by a being’s existence on the psychological, energetic, and sociological environment around them.
Mythic/Narrative Force concerns the degree to which a being carries narrative inevitability and causal significance within their story-world.
This does not mean “the character wins because the writer likes them.”
That would be intellectually worthless.
Within the framework, mythic force is treated as a form of narrative and causal weight. A character’s actions can possess disproportionate significance because of who that character is, what they represent, and how their existence affects the surrounding narrative structure.
Willpower also occupies a special position because it interacts with every other Codex.
The framework’s Vital Persistence Constant connects durability and willpower under entropic pressure.
Its Volitional Output Density describes how will can affect effective physical or energetic expression under crisis conditions.
At sufficiently high levels, Willpower can even function as a substitute for deficiencies in other dimensions.
That is the framework’s concept of mythic exception: the point at which meaning itself begins to overcome ordinary measurement.
Whether one accepts that concept philosophically is separate from its usefulness as a fictional system.
As a narrative mechanism, it solves a problem that conventional statistics cannot:
Why does one character keep moving when every measurable reason says they should stop?
A complete power system needs an answer.
The WIL Codex provides one.
This dimension also connects to the social meaning of power. The National Museum of African American History and Culture’s discussion of “The Foundations of Black Power” demonstrates that power can involve collective identity, self-determination, political agency, cultural affirmation, and the ability to define one’s own future. In fictional terms, WIL is therefore not merely stubbornness. It can represent solidarity, legitimacy, resistance, memory, and the refusal to accept an imposed definition of what is possible.
The Real Innovation: The Six Dimensions Do Not Operate Alone
The strongest part of the Sovereign Scale System is not the six categories individually.
It is what happens between them.
The framework explicitly treats the Codices as interconnected rather than independent measurements. The Law of Triadic Convergence holds that within three-Codex clusters, attributes amplify one another. The Law of Quadratic Expansion further argues that increases across correlated Codices can produce disproportionate practical benefits.
That changes the meaning of a “high-tier” character.
Consider the following relationships.
Strength ↔ Durability
A being capable of extraordinary force needs sufficient structural integrity to survive expressing that force.
Otherwise the power is self-destructive.
Speed ↔ Reaction Time
Movement without perception is incomplete.
A character can possess extreme velocity and still fail to exploit it if their cognition cannot keep pace.
Speed ↔ Durability
Extreme movement generates extreme physical demands.
The faster the being moves, the greater the structural problem becomes.
Energy ↔ Stamina
High-output energy manipulation cannot be evaluated independently of how long that output can be sustained.
Energy ↔ Intelligence
Precision and efficiency can dramatically change the practical value of a given energy reserve.
Willpower ↔ Everything
Willpower functions differently because it can influence the effectiveness of the other dimensions simultaneously.
This is why the system’s model is better understood as a hexastructure rather than a six-column character sheet.
The six dimensions form a system.
They also form a theory of agency. A character may have resources, but resources become meaningful only when they can be converted into action, sustained through difficulty, directed toward an objective, and integrated into a larger social or moral context.
Why a Single Power Number Is Not Enough
There is an obvious counterargument.
Why not simply assign every character an overall score?
The answer is that aggregation can conceal precisely what analysts need to know.
Suppose Character A scores extremely high in Strength but poorly in Intelligence, Speed, Energy control, and Willpower.
Character B is slightly lower in Strength but substantially stronger across the remaining dimensions.
A simple additive score can make the two characters appear equivalent.
They are not.
Their strengths fail differently.
Their weaknesses fail differently.
Their tactical options differ.
Their vulnerabilities differ.
Their strategic value differs.
Their consequences differ.
The Sovereign Scale System addresses this through the Supreme Harmonic Ratio, which uses the geometric mean of the six dimensions:
SHR = (Strength × Speed × Durability × Energy × Intelligence × Willpower)^(1/6)
The significance is straightforward: a severe weakness in one dimension cannot simply be hidden by an enormous number in another.
A balanced character can possess greater holistic sovereignty than a character who is monstrous in one category and deficient everywhere else.
That is a more sophisticated model of capability.
It also reflects something obvious outside fiction:
A system is only as strong as the relationships that allow its parts to function.
Power Scaling Is Really Outcome Scaling
This is the deeper argument.
The purpose of power scaling should not be to determine who has the biggest number.
It should be to determine what a character can reliably accomplish under specified conditions.
That means asking:
- What can they do?
- What can they not do?
- What does using the ability cost?
- What conditions improve performance?
- What conditions degrade it?
- What happens when their strongest ability is countered?
- Can they sustain peak performance?
- Can they adapt?
- Can they survive failure?
- Can they impose their will when conventional capability reaches its limit?
Those questions move power analysis from spectacle toward systems thinking.
They also connect power to heroism.
The Greater Good Science Center’s article “What Makes a Hero?” emphasizes that heroism is not simply a matter of extraordinary ability. It involves action, courage, moral commitment, sacrifice, and the willingness to respond when others remain passive.
That distinction is essential for fictional characters.
A character may possess high STR, SPD, DUR, ENR, INT, and WIL and still fail to become heroic.
Power creates possibility.
Choice creates meaning.
And systems thinking has consequences for worldbuilding.
The Phorditude Universe requires extraordinary abilities to affect governance, economics, warfare, infrastructure, culture, religion, law, and daily life rather than existing as isolated character decoration.
That requirement matters.
If a population contains people capable of city-level energy projection, that should affect military doctrine.
If some individuals possess planetary intelligence, governments cannot reasonably behave as though intelligence remains confined to ordinary human institutions.
If beings possess extreme regeneration, medicine, warfare, incarceration, and law enforcement all change.
If individuals possess overwhelming presence or mythic influence, political legitimacy itself can become a power variable.
The existence of extraordinary capability should alter the civilization around it.
Otherwise the world is pretending not to notice its own premise.
The Six Dimensions Also Change How Characters Should Be Written
For creators, the value of the Sovereign Scale System is not limited to battle debates.
It provides a character-construction framework.
A well-designed powerful character should not merely have impressive abilities.
They should have an architecture of capability.
Perhaps their STR is exceptional but their INT is deliberately constrained.
Perhaps their ENR is enormous but their DUR limits how much energy they can absorb.
Perhaps their SPD is extraordinary but their WIL determines whether they can continue functioning after psychological trauma.
Perhaps their physical statistics are moderate while their INT and WIL make them extraordinarily dangerous leaders.
These differences create character.
They create strategy.
They create conflict.
They create consequences.
Most importantly, they prevent every powerful character from becoming the same character with different costume colors.
That is one of the central failures of shallow superhero design.
When every problem is solved by increasing destructive output, the story eventually becomes numerically louder and narratively poorer.
The Sovereign Scale System provides another route.
Power can become more sophisticated instead of merely becoming larger.
The ethical dimension matters here as well. A character’s identity is shaped not only by what they can do, but by how they understand their power, how others respond to it, and whether they use it for domination, protection, liberation, revenge, or self-definition.
What This Means for Serious Powerscalers
The Sovereign Scale System does not eliminate disagreement.
It makes disagreement more precise.
Two analysts can disagree about a character’s Speed tier without arguing about the character’s Intelligence.
They can debate whether an energy feat demonstrates Projection or Manipulation.
They can distinguish resistance from regeneration.
They can distinguish raw Strength from Power output.
They can examine Willpower separately from physical endurance.
That is a major improvement.
A serious analytical system should not eliminate argument.
It should make arguments easier to examine.
If someone claims that Character X is superior to Character Y, the next question should be:
Superior in what?
Strength?
Speed?
Reaction time?
Durability?
Energy versatility?
Perception?
Strategic adaptation?
Psychological resilience?
Presence?
Narrative force?
Once those distinctions exist, the debate becomes substantially harder to fake.
It also becomes easier to discuss power responsibly. The question is no longer merely whether a character can dominate an opponent. It is whether they can achieve a defined outcome, under defined conditions, while accounting for cost, resistance, uncertainty, and consequence.
The Phorditude Universe and the Logic of Sovereignty
Within the Phorditude Universe, the Sovereign Scale System functions as more than an external ranking chart.
It is an interpretive framework for understanding what power means.
Its central premise is that sovereignty is multidimensional.
A being is not fully defined by what they can destroy.
They are also defined by what they can withstand, understand, control, sustain, influence, and ultimately impose through will.
That creates a richer hierarchy than simple destructive escalation.
A character who can destroy a world may be physically overwhelming.
A character who can govern one may require an entirely different configuration of power.
A character capable of protecting civilization may possess different strengths from one capable of conquering it.
A character capable of surviving either outcome may represent another category altogether.
This is why the Sovereign Scale System treats power as a relationship between capacity, agency, consequence, and meaning.
The measurement does not replace the story.
It exposes the architecture underneath it.
Character Power Scaling Should Measure Capability, Not Spectacle
The fundamental weakness of conventional character power scaling is not that it uses numbers.
It is that it often uses too few of them.
Strength matters.
But strength without stamina is limited.
Speed without reaction time is compromised.
Durability without resistance is incomplete.
Energy without control is inefficient.
Intelligence without adaptation is brittle.
Willpower without capability may be insufficient.
And raw capability without integration can still fail.
The Sovereign Scale System’s six dimensions — STR, SPD, DUR, ENR, INT, and WIL — provide a framework for examining those relationships rather than pretending they do not exist.
That is the real value of the system.
It does not ask only:
How powerful is this character?
It asks the harder questions:
How is that power expressed?
What supports it?
What limits it?
What does it cost?
What happens when it meets another form of power?
What does the character become capable of because all six dimensions interact?
Those questions align with the broader philosophical understanding of power as capacity, agency, achievement, identity, responsibility, and consequence. They also explain why heroic power cannot be separated from moral choice or social context.
That is where power scaling becomes more than a scoreboard.
It becomes analysis.
And that is precisely where the Sovereign Scale System begins.
